The List- November 5
He-he-hello,
It’s been a busy week in the UAE following the wrap of F1 in Abu Dhabi- CNN is now broadcasting from Abu Dhabi, dozens of Champions Leagues matches to watch, Manolo Blahnik was in town, the opening of DIFC’s first dental clinic, the launch of Esquire Middle East, the premier of Ishaqamaan, and I’m trying out a new look for my blog- it almost feels like 2008 in Dubai!
I even got out on my crutches and a high heel a few times this week to keep my finger on the pulse of what’s cool in Dubai.
Here’s my take on "what to", "where to", and "how to" this week:
In Dubai…
Where to eat - Dubai Healthcare City: Wild Peeta is finally open for business! Hip Hip Hooray! Opened by two Emirati brothers with lots of input from the Dubai twittersphere, they serve up “FUSION Shawarma sandwiches and hearty-fresh salads” They do deliver, but take the time to stop in the shop and congratulate them on opening. What to read- local: Time Out’s Jeremy Lawrence took the helm of the newly launched Esquire Middle East. First issue is a gorgeous glossy chock full of great articles. Just like the US publication, they’ve pulled together a team of talented writers. Maybe they’ll even get a few articles from David Sedaris if we’re lucky. Pick up a copy and let me know what you think.
What to mall- Ibn Battuta Mall: Grand Megaplex. If you live on the south side of the creek it’s worth the drive out to Ibn Battuta Mall’s cinema because it’s way cleaner than the one at MOE, there is an iMax screen, and on Tuesdays you can get 2 for 1 cinema tickets with their loyalty card.
What to weekend: Dubai Sound City The Doves are on tonight, Happy Mondays tomorrow, and my favorite Echo and the Bunnymen on Saturday. True story: When I was 15 Ian McCulloch touched my hand at a concert and I didn’t wash it for a week.
Get your groove on: Pure have launched a new Urban Night on Tuesdays at Quantum. “Shawty get loose!” thanks @AymenAlsaleh for the tip
What to do if you break your foot and have trouble getting around: the DVD Lady has a good stock of independent films at the moment. I picked up Tormented, Nights and Weekends, and Trouble the Water last week.

What to read: Speaking of David Sedaris, it is a little early for Christmas, but this is one of his best essays ever, which was featured in Equire Magazine and can be found in his book Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim. David Sedaris is a brilliant comedian, humorist, writer worth checking out.
How to save the Earth: Try out veganism. Yes, I’m serious, keep reading. 70% of previous forested land in the Amazon is occupied by pastures. The livestock sector is a key player in increasing water use, accounting for over 8% of global human water use, mostly for the irrigation of feedcrops. he livestock sector is a major player, responsible for 18% of greenhouse gas emissions measured in CO2 equivalent. This is a higher share than transport. Mark Bittman, NY Times food genius, advocates an easy strategy of being vegan before dinnertime. I’ve never been doing a version of this for 2 months and I’ve never had more energy in my life. (And according to these ladies, you may even lose weight)
