The List- July 15

He-he-hello,

Anyone know where that greeting comes from? Hints- movie, Sisyphus , falafel- classic.

Anyway, still working working toward more consistent distribution for The List. I'll get it together soon, stick with me.

I am constantly on the lookout for the best tips, suggestions, and commands about living it up in Dubai and elsewhere. So here's what I've got for you this week:

In Dubai

Where to eat in Deira: How could I forget the delicious kebabs from Samad on Muraqqabat Street? My new foodie soul mate @OmarAlfi reminded me of this gem in Deira. Open until 2:30am too. Don’t be afraid of Deira. 04 229 3660

What to culture: Drumming Week at Dragon Mart. FREE traditional Chinese drumming classes 23-25 July at 5pm, 7 pm and 9 pm at the Atrium - main entrance of Dragon Mart – don’t miss the kashkawan saj in Section FA after, yummmmm….

What to mall - MOE: Harvey Nichols, oh wait... no it’s closed... or is it? Did anyone else follow that T-shirt saga on Twitter or bbm?

What to mall- Lamcy Plaza: Sticky, sandy summer weather sends us all the malls in search of sales, “surprises”, and AC. Try Lamcy Plaza on Oud Metha St. in Bur Dubai for a change. A very bizarre vertical open floor plan head straight to Daiso Supermarket for cheap cool Japanese products and then see hunky Bollywood star John Abraham in his latest film ‘New York’ afterwards.

Get your rub on: Atlantis Spa has some amazing summer massage deals. Book two 90 minute massages during the month of July and get 90% off the second one. (60 Minute – 60% off 2nd one but 90 minutes is the way to go) 04-4261020

Get your groove on: table or not Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at Boudoir in Dubai Marine will never let you down if you’re in the mood to shake your money maker.

How to answer -“Do you want anything from Tunisia?”: “Oui, please bring me some fresh Tunisian tuna and some gants de hammam (they’re like 500fils).” Tunisian tuna is the best you can get. And the gants de hammam will keep your skin soft all year round.

… and around the globe

What to read – for thought: Wild Thorns- an Arabic novel, that portrays two brothers different perspectives on the Israeli occupation of the West Bank. The female author does an incredible job with the narrative and “portrays credibly a troubling spectrum of understandably extreme responses to disenfranchisement and oppression.”

What to read – for fun: The Prince and the Pauper - as I always say, summertime is ‘Mark Twain Time’. Start with this little gem by ‘the father of American literature’. “Out of the theme of switched identities, Mark Twain fashioned both a scathing attack upon social hypocrisy and injustice, and an irresistible comedy imbued with the sense of high-spirited play that belongs to his happiest creative period.” You should be able to pick this up at Borders in the classics sections for 15AED or less.

Anthem of our youth: Fool’s Gold by the Stone Roses

“These boots were made for walking

The Marquis de Sade don’t wear no boots like these”

What to podcast: We inevitably spend lots of time in our cars in Dubai (or LA for that matter) and why suffer through hours of Lady Gaga and those lame Radio DJs when you can use that time to enlighten your mind? I absolutely love the podcast Speaking of Faith. I recommend “The Ecstatic Faith of Rumi” and “The Shia-Sunni Divide” with Vali Nasr- I used to work with this man and he’s brilliant, one of the greatest brains writing about Iran right now.

WTF?: What were these photo editors thinking? Oprah's head on Ann-Margret's body?

Get your nostalgia on: defining moments in our collective consciousness presented by the Fuggers on their 5th birthday (my favorite has to be #6, ahahahahaha, Dawson, ahahahaha)

Take a laughternoon break: A classic from The Onion

Who to follow on Twitter (for Twitter enthusiasts): Tweeterism a blogger who writes about Twitter

Who to follow on Twitter (for fun): Sockington a hilarious tweeting cat who has ¾ of a million followers.

Who to follow on Twitter (Dubai): Modhesh, bio says Yellow and fun! This thing's a real character, no pun intended…

How to tweet better: I really like Tweet Genius better that Twitterberry

The List- June 24

He-he-hello,

Sorry for the long absence, I was traveling for the wedding of my gorgeous friend AL in the English countryside. It was quite the affair, she should go into the wedding planning business.

I didn't make preparations for mobile-blogging so please excuse the unexpected hiatus.

So now back in sunny Dubai with a list ful of what to's.

xoxo,
Lulu

In Dubai:

What to Wednesday night: lecture at Art Sawa about the life, work and influence of avant-garde American composer John Cage 7.30 PM to 9.00 PM 100AED

What to Thursday (or Friday) night: Dive-In Movie Nights at The Montgomerie Golf Club. Watch movies under the stars from your own floatie Dh45 reservations a must 043905600

What to Saturday night: The uber-cool Japanese restaurant from Bahrain Mirai has opened in Souk Al Bahar. The only place in Dubai you can get Dom Perignon by the glass, besides Burj Al Arab. Call for reservations 04 439 7333 (thanks for the heads up Daisy O.)

What to Mall - MOE: grab a buddy and some Napoli gelato located on Level 1 next to the lifts by Ski Dubai and then grab a bench in the center outside of Harvey Nic's and people watch. Try to guess where people are from by how they dress and walk, you'll pass a good hour

What to Mall- Ibn Battuta: Extreme Roller Rink is open from 1pm every day in India Court and Transformers 2 opens in the UAE tomorrow and is playing on the IMAX at Grand Megaplex!

What to Eco: pick up a twin pack of Illume energy efficient bulbs for a measly 10AED. The eco-conscious bulbs consume about 1/5 of the power of incandescent bulbs, last 10 times longer and emit 70% less heat, leading to less power usage for air-conditioning - an especially attractive characteristic during the coming summer months. Available at all LuLu Outlets, Sharaf DG Stores, Union Co-op Stores

What to sweat for: my favorite fitness studio is offering a great fitness package that includes yoga, Pilates, and cardio classes for just 400AED call for more details 044243777

On your way out of Dubai:

What to DutyFree: Pick up a pair of noise cancellation headphones and you can start enjoying ICE the minute you board the plane.

What to pick up as a last minute souvenir in DXB: yummy Bateel dates for 29AED a pack in a pretty gold box with a bow make a perfect last minute "I brought you something special from Dubai"

What to Emirates Lounge at DXB: Don't miss the yummy wasabi crakers by the bar. OMG, yum! Grab a few handfuls on your way in and your way out.

What to ICE: Not ready to commit to a 2 hour serious movie like Gran Torrino? Watch How to Marry a Millionaire, the 1953 classic with Marilyn Monroe, Betty Grable, Lauren Bacall as three models of modest means who rent an expensive Manhattan penthouse apartment and pose as women of wealth as part of an elaborate scheme to snare rich husbands. Marilyn at her best. (ICE rocks!!!)

And around the world:

Who to follow on Twitter: The Sartorialist Style at its best. Watch and learn, watch and learn

WTF? Seriously London! What's with all the Ugg boots? Was just there and they are still all over the place. Ladies, please! Cankles never look good.

What to trend: Yellow! Find the perfect shade of sunshine in a handbag or billowy dress and brighten any room. Nothing says summer like sunny yellow hues.

How to prevent (or incite) road rage: keep these handy little signs in your car, but if you live in the UAE you may not want to use"the finger".

What to distract yourself with at work: Simpsonize yourself

What to answer when asked “Do you want anything from Australia?”: “Ya mate, paw paw cream.” Lucas Papaw Ointment is a cure for bruises, burns, cuts, dry skin, insect stings, sunburn, and splinters; as well as carbuncles, whitlow, and tinea if you have those too, whatever they are…

Laughternoon break: this video is from an old Bob Fosse routine from the 60s called "Mexican Breakfast" and has been set to "Walk It Out" by DJ Unk. It is kind of scary how well the two go together. Really, it is all about those moves and killer outfits. Hilarious (via http://www.splendora.com/)

The List- May 28

What to local paper (English): wknd. who woulda thought you'd want to read Khaleej Times without being paid to do it (PR peeps-can I get a witness?) pick up a copy this weekend. Trust me- great writers, interesting articles, lovely layout.

What to local paper (Arabic): Emarat Al Youm Seriously, do not miss the crime roundup (print version is best). Check out the pictures of criminals who got busted posed pathetically with their contraband. Have an Arabic speaker translate it for you. Bet you'll think twice before attempting to pull off a heist with your buddies from the cricket pitch.

What to Karama: flourescent Suzanis. I found one randonmly piled on top of a bunch of pashminas. Uber-ethnic-uber coolness. Pssst- I gotta guy. Ali at Walily Novelties & Gifts U-Block in the Karama Shopping Complex 04-3378582. Tell him Lulu sent you and he'll give you "best price"

What to drive all the way to Ibn Battuta Mall for: Napoli Gelato in Egypt Court- the Belgian Biscuit flavor is TO DIE FOR...!

What to drink: WATER and plenty of it. It's getting H.O.T.

What to late night eats: Chalet in Umm Suqeim. I am notoriously "anti" restaurants that offer more than one type of cuisine (like Teatro or Spectrum on One - gag) BUT this place rocks. The lamb chops are delicious and don't miss the Sheikh's Shake-date flavored milkshake. Open til 1:30am in Umm Suqeim on Jumeirah Beach Road just past Al Manara Road on the beach side 04 348 7557

Don’t bother: Spectrum on One at the Fairmont Hotel. If a guy takes you there on the first date, don't even bother with a second date. So contrived! It's a deal breaker in my book.

Laughternoon break: Inappropriate wedding songs

Who to follow on Twitter: urlesque- exposing the hidden gems of the web so you don't have to spend all day doing it yourself.

What to web-voyeur: Post Secret what is your secret?

WTF???: another wacky Japanese invention
What to rub: wash with joe - myriad benefits from vascoconstriction to UV protection. the second best way to improve your morning shower.

What to give the girl who has everything: "The One Hundred" Nina Garcia's guide to the pieces every stylish woman must own. She'll feel better knowing she has all of it.

What to give the guy who has everything: USB keyboard vacuum What the hell else are you gonna get him?

How to get all that good stuff: Aramex Shop & Ship save 50% until June 19 on a lifetime membership for a US & UK mail box.

What to read: Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell. Gladwell asks the provocative question in Outliers: why do some people succeed, living remarkably productive and impactful lives, while so many more never reach their potential? Available in paperback at Kinokuniya in Dubai Mall

Weekend anthem: I Will Follow by U2. The opening track of U2's debut album "Boy". Rock out dude.

What to TV: Meerkat Mannor drama in the animal world

What to answer -“Do you want anything from Nepal?”: Khah! Ju! Ah! handmade yak yarn slippers please. The AC is starting to crank up, trust me they'll come in handy.

The List- May 21

He-he-hello Dubai,

Welcome to my weekly list of "What To" in Dubai. I'm always searching for the best of the best in Dubai to share with you. Feel free to send me your suggestions and I'll check them out.

Enjoy The List for May 21.

xoxo,

Late laughternoon break: spread the awkardness

Who to follow on Twitter: Tom Gara -tech and telecom reporter for The National, UAE.

What to snack post 400/Boudoir/Karma Kafé : order the foul at Al Reef Bakery -across from Safa Park on Al Wasl Road...amazing

What to weekend lunch: delicious grilled fresh fish at Sammach in Souk Al Bahar, don’t miss the hommus Beiruti, fatoush, and batatta harra.

What to visit another emirate for: kitschy klassic Dreamland is so worth the trip (avoid Fridays though)

What to tourist: take a ride on the Palm Monorail out to Atlantis. It’s the best view of the Palm Jumeirah- 25AED roundtrip is a steal compared to 1500AED from HeliDubai!

Don’t bother: Cavalli Club over-hyped and poor service to boot. Until they get their act together there are so many better places to see-and-be-seen in Dubai.

What to hair: sprinkle some baby powder at your roots to fight the greasy look and add volume as the humidity in Dubai amps up and leaves us with lifeless locks. (brush it and give yourself a blast with the hairdryer to be sure to eliminate any evidence)

What to rub: Jergens Original Scent lotion… love the delicious cherry almond scent and oh so smooth.

What to SlingBox: The NBA Conference Finals. Because you can’t actually find the games live in Dubai. Go Nuggets!

What to read: Taxi by Khaled Al Khamissi
Delightful vignettes from Cairo cabbies that bring to life the inimitable energy of the throbbing metropolis.

What to Tupac: “Keep ya head up” by Tupac - arguably Tupac's best individual performance ever. Over DJ Daryl's rendition of Zapp & Roger's "Be Alright," Pac delivers a message about staying ahead of the struggle and showing respect to all, regardless of gender.

Weekend anthem: Kerri Hilson “Do It” love the LL Cool J musical reference in the intro

What to answer -“Do you want anything from Paris?”: Mais oui! A lovely light green box tied with pink ribbon filled with delicious macaroons from Ladurée, s’il vous plait
